NOTE: Clutch cable issues are very common. The primary issue is that the self-adjusting factory cable does not work correctly which causes premature clutch failures. There are numerous bulletins regarding this topic. High pedal effort is extremely common regardless of the type of cable used. In fact it is the most common cause of the original cable failure. The self adjusting mechanism is not strong enough for the pedal effort which has increased over time. High pedal effort is caused by lack of lubrication at the release bearing sleeve-support interface which is often very rusty and galled on disassembly. The diaphragm clutch assemblies pedal effort increases with clutch disk wear. Adding grease to the cable is a good idea regardless. The manually adjustable cable will require one to adjust the cable periodically as the disk wears. We have found that it is a little difficult to get the lock nut tightened as the position of the adjuster is somewhat awkward with the cable in the car. One needs to use 2 short open end wrenches, and to be sure to tighten the steel lock nut against the correct plastic nut. Play with it before installing it so you understand how to do the job in the car.
NOTE: The Hydraulic conversion is to replace the clutch cable completely. Cable failures often cause premature clutch failures. This is a fairly in-depth job and should be done by a qualified tech. We have found this to be a very effective way to cure any clutch cable problems. We also recommend replacing the clutch kits when doing this job.

NOTE: The clutch throwout bearing is not available by itself. It is only available with the purchase of the slave cylinder. Both the slave and the throwout bearing should be replaced when replacing the clutch.
NOTE: See the photo of the two clutchs that exist in the 99 cars. The picture on the bottom is the old style clutch kits and can identified by noting that the fingers are flat and so is the throwout bearing face. If you have a 99 1975 or older you will have to buy the individual pieces to repair your clutch because clutch kit 8818098 is no longer available. Companies will superceed this number to a later kit but it will NOT work as a replacement because of the flywheel size on cars prior to 1975.
