MANUAL TRANSMISSION REMOVAL

Manual Transmission Removal Instructions

Warning!Manual Transmission Removal should be done by some qualified to do so. This job can be very dangerous. Used jack stands on all corners or a lift. If the car falls you could get killed. VERY DANGEROUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

STEP 1 Place the car on a lift.
STEP 2 Its recommended to place fender protectors etc. over the fenders to protect the paint.
STEP 3 Remove the intake manifold cover and mass air flow sensor along with the hoses.
STEP 4 Remove the battery cable leads from the battery and remove the battery.
STEP 5 Put the car in 4th gear and remove the plastic plug from the transmission. Lock the transmission in 4th gear using a locking pin or a metal rod etc.
STEP 6 Loosen the clamp holding the shifter rod to the linkage in the transmission from above.
STEP 7 Lift up the shift lever boot and engage 3rd gear so the shifter rod disengages from the linkage and then insert another locking pin etc. in the gear lever housing.
STEP 8 Press the clutch pedal in about 50mm and wedge a stick between the pedal and seat, just something to hold the pedal down to prevent brake fluid from flowing out of the reservoir.
STEP 9 Remove the locking clip on the slave cylinder and disconnect the delivery pipe.
STEP 10 Unplug the connectors for the reverse lights.
STEP 11 Remove the 3 upper transmission bolts.
STEP 12 Unplug the connectors to the oxygen sensor and release them from the clamps.
STEP 13 Slightly lift the engine and transmission using a cherry picker (engine hoist).
STEP 14 Raise the car.
STEP 15 Remove the front wheels.
STEP 16 Remove any clamps on the oxygen sensor cable.
STEP 17 Remove the front exhaust system by undoing the flange on the turbo and then removing the rear mounts. The exhaust system should be removed in that order to prevent the flexible bellows from being damaged.
STEP 18 Remove the air shields and belt circuit cover on the passenger side wheel housing.
STEP 19 Remove the suspension arms on both sides.
STEP 20 Remove the two nuts on the rear engine mount and the center bolts on the subframe.
STEP 21 Use a cherry picker (engine hoist) with front and rear supports to lift the subframe slightly.
STEP 22 Remove the remaining bolts holding the subframe in place. Be careful with the washers on the rear mounts.
STEP 23 Lower the engine hoist and move it to the side.
STEP 24 Remove the transmission oil by removing the drain plug. Install the drain plug once all of the oil has drained. Torque to 37 ft lbs.
STEP 25 Pull out the drivers side drive shaft (this will require a special tool Saab # 8996654) Suspend the shaft using a tie down strap etc. and insert a plug into the gearbox.
STEP 26 Remove the splash cover by the flywheel.
STEP 27 Disconnect the ground leads from the transmission.
STEP 28 Remove the bolts holding the transmission to the engine that can be reached from below except for the front one.
STEP 29 Undo the two drivers side engine mounting bolts from the body.
STEP 30 Remove the mounts from the transmission.
STEP 31 Lower the car and lower the whole drive unit about 5 cm.
STEP 32 Raise the car and use something to support the engine like a block of wood and place it on a jack stand.
STEP 33 Position a hydraulic jack in the center of the transmission and strap in down.
STEP 34 Remove the last bolt holding the transmission to the engine.
STEP 35 Remove the rear engine mounting bracket from the transmission.
STEP 36 Lower the transmission and pull it out from the side.
STEP 37 Use the engine hoist to help you remove the transmission from the jack. (Be careful not to tip over the jack or jack stands)
STEP 38 Refit in Reverse.
