The brake light switch is actuated mechanically by the brake pedal and It is located in the pedal assembly.
| STEP 1 | The switch should be adjusted so that the brake lights come on when the pedal is depressed about 10 mm. See below for removal instructions: |
| STEP 2 | Remove the lower part of the instrument panel on the driver's side by removing the tabs that hold the panel up |
| STEP 3 | Turn the brake light switch clockwise and remove it |
| STEP 4 | Unplug the connector to the switch and refit in reverse order |

chris says: Mine didn't work so I took it apart entirely and gave it a good clean. You can test it with a continuity meter to make sure you got it right. With the switch out contacts 1 and 2 are normally closed, and contacts 2 and 4 are normally open. It wasn't bad at all!

On my 1998 9000 CSE the brake light switch is on the PASSENGER side, not the driver's side. SAAB didn't bother rerouting the wiring from the LHD model! Remove the casing around the fuse box by releasing the two tabs (press the centre of the tab with something suitable, like an Allen key, and you stand about a 50% chance of getting it out intact). Remove the switch by squeezing the tabs top and bottom. The replacement switch is self adjusting - get someone to hold down the brake pedal while you fit the replacement - releasing the pedal sets the switch correctly.
